Fare thee well, Rapid7
June 1, 2022
Risks rife, vulns bare, exploits abound - oh dear!
Yet o’ weary patron, bear no alarm,
This herd kindly stands near, abate thine fear!
With our tools and talents we do oust harm.
Such great wonders forged by our august Moose!
What enchantments we do nobly invite!
Yet more shall be rendered, worthy of roose.
Onward we trot, granting ‘metry and ‘sight.
Wondrous our next form that will soon emerge,
Yet this thankful spirit is drawn astray.
Heavy my heart, as if struck by a dirge.
Farewell, colleagues, I grudgingly convey.
Another journey I will soon commence.
Though strangers, my friends, we will not be hence.
What do these strange words mean?
Moose
- what Rapid7 refers to its people.
'metry
- short for “telemetry”. My team dealt heavily with raw Internet telemetry. Check out some of it here.
'sight
- short for “Insight”, the core platform offered by Rapid7.
Yes, I did in fact publicly announce my resignation in the form of (mostly) a Shakespearean sonnet (rhyme scheme of abab cdcd efef gg
, and what really should be a bunch of iambic pentameters) . I think it makes the experience way more fun and memorable.
I previously wrote another frivolous semi-sonnet for my colleagues on the dangers of leaving computers unlocked in an environment full of security practitioners.
Retrospective #
Yesterday was my last day working at Rapid7. I had an absolutely wonderful 5+ year experience there.
Frankly, I could have easily stayed for many more years. I worked with wonderful people, I was comfortable, and I felt at home.
The journey continues #
An unexpected opportunity appeared not too long ago, and after some deliberation, I ultimately decided it was a chance to take a leap of faith and really push my personal boundaries in a space that I believe can have some positive societal impact.
I’m moving on to a role as the head of data science with a company called Moonsense.
Change is scary, but I’m super excited about this new phase in my professional life.
